It’s been an exciting week here at Penney & Company but there’s no rest for the wicked and I’ve got new items to show you!  A mix of old and new, large and small, these stylish staples will transform your house into a lived-in home.  Take a look and feel free to call or email for information or to purchase over the phone.

First up, these graphic and gorgeous plastic placemats that can handle and spill and still look great!  The glasses are wonderful for drinks, but even better as a bud vase or toothbrush holder!

Penney & Co Plastic Placemats $ and Raffia-Encased Glasses or Vases $

Penney & Co Plastic Placemats $7.50 each and Raffia-Encased Glasses or Vases $9 each

Check out these stunning throws!  I always go for a simple throw like these with texture so that they’re a fresh colour block on a sofa or bed and don’t compete with the cushions.  Well these oh-so-soft examples are just that and come in a beautiful selection of colours from soft coral, to peacock blue, cream, greige and spring green!

Penney & Co Faux Mohair Throws $49.50

If you’re looking for a way to bring some natural texture into a room that has too much wood and hard angles, consider a woven console like this.  It would be perfect as a sofa table or for extra serving area in a dining room too and the grey wash is so elegant.

Penney & Co Woven Console/Sofa Table $, Vintage Botanical $

Penney & Co Woven Console/Sofa Table $225 40W x 30H x 16.5D, Vintage Botanical $189

I am in LOVE with these chalky stoneware picture frames!  They come in three different shapes and sizes and cost next to nothing.  Totally chic and totally cheap!  You need some of these.

Penney & Co Stoneware Frames $

Penney & Co Stoneware Frames $14 round and square, $15 rectangular

If you’re like me, you’re longing for a punch of colour at this time of year.  These moroccan stools are the perfect hit of fresh colour that would work well with neutrals or mixed with other colours like burnt orange and chocolate brown.  Great as a small perch for your drink near a sofa or even beside a bath tub for your glass of wine or a soothing candle.

Penney & Co Moroccan Side Tables $159 each

Penney & Co Moroccan Side Tables $159 each 18″ H x 14″ Across

For more texture and natural warmth, you can’t beat chunky woven baskets.  These ones come in lots of sizes and oval or round and would look great filled with blankets, firewood or a big potted plant!

Penney & Co Washed Willow Baskets $

Penney & Co Washed Willow Baskets $59-$89

This restored antique buffet is a stunner.  It’s been completely rebuilt from it’s wobbly beginnings and the drawers and cupboards glide perfectly.  It’s been refinished with layers of pale blue paint and distressed, then sanded to the smoothest finish I’ve ever come across!  The cupboard doors feature reversible panels so you can choose either a decorative or more simple look.  Clips on the inside of the doors make the switch easy!

Penney & Co Antique Buffet with Oval Mirror and Reversible Panels $775

This sweet little table could work as a bench at the front door (just tuck shoes beneath) or as a small coffee table.

Penney & Co Bench/Coffee Table $

Penney & Co Bench/Coffee Table $165 16″D x 43″W x 20″H

And finally for a shot of coral or fresh blue, try these graphic chevron printed cushions!  They’re a steal at $30 and come with zippers for easy maintenance.  Pop a couple into the mix on your sofa or try some on your bed for a fresh uplift.

Penney & Co Chevron Cushions in Coral and Blue $30 each

Penney & Co Chevron Cushions in Coral and Blue $30 each 20″x 20″, poly insert with zipper

A huge thank you to Cobi Ladner who came out to Penney & Company last night and another huge thank you to each of you who attended the event at my little shop!

It was a gigantic success – there were over 100 of you here! – and lots of fun chatting with Cobi and fellow decor-enthusiasts.  Cobi told me it was a wonderful turnout and a lot of fun and I know she enjoyed meeting all of my Whitby friends at Penney & Company.  Plus it was fun getting to hang out and catch up with my old boss for an evening!

Stay tuned for future events at Penney & Company (there are a few in the works!) and if you missed this one, be sure to come next time for more fun and festivities.  Here are some snap shots of the party and also the shop just before the storm of shoppers hit!

Once again, thank you Cobi and thank you Penney & Company friends!

I of course forgot to get some shots with me and Cobi (arg!) but there were two newspapers present and I know they got some good shots, so I’ll wait for those!

Tonight’s the night!  Our first ever Penney & Company event is happening TONIGHT at 6pm-8pm with special guest Cobi Ladner.  She and I were emailing this morning and she’s gearing up for the trek out to Whitby this afternoon.  She even taunted me with the possibility of bringing me her back issues of Martha Stewart Living from the 1990’s (GOLD!).  We’ll see if that materializes, but either way Cobi will definitely materialize!

I’m a busy bee getting the shop ready with last minute touches like candle light, cupcakes and Cobi-approved colourful blooms!  Make sure you stop by!  Cobi will be happy to meet you!

Okay I may be the only one who is excited about this, but I finally got new business cards for Penney & Company!  If you’ve been in the shop and I’ve scribbled my contact info on a post-it note, you’ll understand why this is such a big deal.  I apologize!

The cards look fantastic and were designed by the amazing team of Julie, Julia and Matt of Hustle&Bustle Inc.  If you ever need some graphic designing or branding done you should definitely call them!   Thanks guys – I’m in love with the results!

For those of you who aren’t magazine junkies like I am and haven’t catalogues years and years of House & Home Magazine, memorizing the staff and playing detective with each prop or room set you see, I thought I’d let you know a little more about our esteemed guest Cobi Ladner, who is going to Penney & Co to meet YOU on Thursday.

Cobi Ladner has worked at publishing institutions such as Chatelaine and Canadian Living but it was her move to Canadian House & Home in 1990 that would make the biggest impact on Canada’s design scene.  Under her leadership as editor in chief, House & Home’s readership exploded from 619, 000 to 2.5 MILLION readers!  Along with owner and publisher, Lynda Reeves, Cobi built House & Home into the brand it is today forging many amazing brand-extensions along the way including books, television and nation-wide product lines available at The Bay and Zellers.  I will always remember watching Cobi and Lynda chat on their daily HGTV program over the years and absorbing each tidbit!

Cobi may have accomplished a lot in terms of numbers and sales and prestige, but many people think of her as the heart and soul of House & Home and would flip eagerly to her editor’s letter at the beginning of each thick and glossy issue.  Cobi would warmly welcome us into her life – her real life – with it’s many decorating adventures, personal stories and the joy of raising her family.  She would put all of the glitz and glam of design into perspective and bring it down to earth for us all to enjoy together.

Since her years at House & Home (where she was my first real boss!) Cobi has gone on to create a brand with heart and soul all it’s own called cobistyle.  It includes upholstered furniture, fabric, draperies, accessories, lighting and much more.  And she’s not done yet – Cobi is always coming out with something new and fresh to dazzle us!

Well I guess it’s still January in Canada after all.  It’s been such a funny winter with warm patches and cold snaps and only one dumping of snow that I remember so far.  But this morning we’ve had a big blanket of white where I live.  Driving is a mess and I have to drive into the city in about 10 minutes, but I’m choosing to embrace the beauty of winter.

In that spirit, take a look at these gorgeous shots by Ben Pentreath of London this winter.  Breathtaking no?  Winter is full of beauty.  Now if I could just avoid the winter beauty that is highway 401…
